Wanderu is a website and app that helps you book affordable bus and train travel, by assisting in finding stations and comparing trips and travel options. It was founded by Polina Raygorodskaya and Igor Bratnikov, after they were stranded in rural Virginia with no way of finding the closest bus station. The Wanderu team joined MITX Up program in 2012, and have made huge strides since then.
What makes Wanderu different than other travel sites and apps, is its powerful search tool that can provide travel information from more specific, non-major cities--20% of the searches done through Wanderu could not be performed on other sites.
The app has over sixteen million users, and since its launch in 2013, it has undergone a rebranding, launches iOS and Android apps, formed partnerships with Amtrak, Peter Pan, and Greyhound, and pitched to Virgin Group Founder Richard Branson (after being named a top three finalist in the Extreme Tech Challenge).
In early 2016, the cofounders were named on Forbes “30 Under 30” list in the Consumer Tech category, and expanded their service to Canada by partnering with train provider VIA Rail. Wanderu was also featured as the “Best New Travel App” in the App Store, and was recognized by TIME as one of its favorite iPhone apps.
